"Arsenic and Old Lace"
A comedy by Joseph Kesselring
"Arsenic and Old Lace" is a masterpiece in macabre humor that tells the story of Mortimer Brewster, a theatre-hating drama critic and his peculiar family. His two elderly spinster aunts have begun helping poor, lonely souls out of their misery with glasses of homemade elderberry wine lace with arsenic. His brother Teddy thinks he is President Theodore Roosevelt, charges up the stairs as if they were San Juan hill, and digs portions of the Panama Canal in the basement (which work ideally as graves for the poor, lonely souls the aunts have "helped."). Mortimer's eldest brother is wanted for murder, and has been on the run for years in Europe. In order to escape the police, he has had plastic surgery to make himself look like horror film actor Boris Karloff. Add to the mix the bumbling Brooklyn police department and the sanitarium workers who are attempting to evaluate Teddy's condition and you have a timeless American screwball comedy.
