Now Showing: "Animal Crackers"
Among the super-star names of classic comedy, none shine brighter than the Marx Brothers. Their unique brand of absurdity has never been equaled. Amadeus Community Theatre will bring the Marx’s screwy antics to their stage when they present “Animal Crackers” at their theatre 102 North Main Street in Dickson. It’s the summer of 1929 in this madcap classic, and Mrs. Rittenhouse, the upper echelon of high society, is throwing a party at her Long Island mansion for the return of noted African explorer Captain Spalding (originally portrayed by Groucho Marx) and to unveil a priceless statue donated by art patron Roscoe Chandler. Musicians Emmanuel Ravelli and the Professor (parts played by Chico and Harpo Marx in the stage and film version) also show up to entertain the guests, and to make a few bucks in the process. However, after the priceless statue goes missing, it’s up to Spalding, Ravelli, and the Professor to help find it. Well, perhaps “help” is a bit misleading, but it does give the characters a chance to engage in the wacky comedy style that made the Marx Brothers famous. “It’s no surprise that each generation re-discovers the Marx Brothers,” says Ed May, director of the show for Amadeus Community Theatre. “The Marx Brothers humor isn’t based on a specific time or place. It is the very definition of zany, madcap comedy that continues to withstand the test of time.”
